January 25, 2022 - 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Calling it a missed year is an understatement. How can we expect our child to assimilate when they haven’t been practicing their social skills? What about the child who was shy, introverted or lonely before COVID? Academics are critical, yet we shortchange our children when we discount the importance of social connection. In this presentation, Caroline Maguire will share how you can support your child to (re)build important relationships with peers and adults. You will learn how to coach your child and teach them social skills including listening, managing emotions, being flexible and reading social cues. As with any other skill, if not practiced and used, social skills become rusty.
January 31, 2022 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Finding the right treatment and the right therapist for your child and your family can be a daunting task, especially in the pandemic era. Dr. Steven Kurtz, an international authority on effective treatments for children, youth and families will help parents understand the process, from identifying the most well-supported treatments to making sure the fit with the therapist is a good one. Dr. Kurtz also will discuss interesting and novel treatments that are "not ready for prime time" in terms of research support even though they sound like they should work. Using anxiety, ADHD, disruptive behaviors, ASD and selective mutism as examples he will show us how to navigate the maze of potential treatments and therapists.

STAR NET Region II has cancelled all in person events in our Training Calendar and will be sharing information about either new topics or adapted versions of some of our previously planned events in the coming weeks. In addition, our staff continue to be available to support early childhood professionals by providing individual or small group supports virtually. We invite you to contact us to discuss training or other supports you may need.
