Mastery Paths to Support Student Learning

Students in Mr. Ponczek's Algebra 2 class have the opportunity to prepare for the 2022/23 school year early thanks to a special feature in Canvas known as Mastery Paths. Mr. Ponczek, also known as "Mr. Ponz", wanted to give his students personalized resources that would support their future learning without requiring them to sift through material on their own. In addition, he needed a way to be able to split his class into different groups without creating an unsustainable system.

"I was a bit intimidated to try this due to the extreme organization that would be required to keep the three groups separated while they are all working on something new each day. When I learned about Mastery Paths from our district tech coach, I thought that this could be the tool that I needed to support students in a manageable way. Mastery Paths have been amazing at organizing the information for the different groups and giving them all the resources that they need, in real-time as they need them, right in Canvas."

Mr. Ponz is also employing the power of video and student voice in his classes by having students create videos in which they teach their "future self" how to tackle problems that proved difficult over the last year. In the future, when students are in a new math class with a new teacher, it may be difficult to recall prerequisite math skills and terminology. By creating a "future self" video learning bank, students will have their own personalized resources housed right in their Canvas Studio library - accessible only to them. Within the video, the student is addressing common misconceptions that THEY had and any other helpful tips to help them recall information quickly in future math courses.
