2nd graders at KST decided to get into the Halloween spirit this month by working on a math activity with pumpkins. They first read the book, "How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin" by Margaret McNamara. The book had a great connection to several place value standards, from skip-counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, to comparing the value of numbers. Students had the opportunity to work in teams to develop a plan for counting the seeds in their pumpkin, and then discuss their choices with others. Between all three classes, we counted 5,499 seeds! We had a great time learning fun facts about pumpkins and applying learned math standards.
